The one car show I look forward to most is the yearly car show at The Steelyard in Providence. I’ve been going for a while(pics from ‘ !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , ‘ !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , ‘ !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , ‘ !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , & ‘ !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ), and it has been a really nice show full of an amazing selection of cars in a great setting.
Last year it was so popular I showed up 15 minutes after it started and had to park the truck down the street.
This year I didn’t bother bringing the truck (motor is acting up and I haven’t gotten the new motor together yet), so I parked a block away and we walked up. I took the picture above and turned the corner, to find this:
It is hard to see, but the crowds around the entrance are so big they have filled the sidewalks and parking lanes and are spilling into the street. Nearly every person had a beer in their hands, and they were shouting at every vehicle to “do burnouts!” As we walked up a ratty Camaro obliged and started doing a burnout on a public road while big crowds pressed in on it from both sides. As soon as he moved on they started shouting at the stanced BMW behind him to do a burnout. When he didn’t they kept yelling at him until he drove away.
I looked at the drunken mob and realized there wasn’t going to be room for me to look at and photograph the cars without getting crowded on all sides. I decided not to bother going in, and we turned around to walk back to the car.
When we got back to the xB I was standing alongside it unlocking the door when a F250 brotruck pulled alongside and intentionally “rolled coal” down the length of my car, engulfing me & it in a black cloud.
So instead of wandering under the gantries of the Steelyard looking at amazing vehicles I am sitting at home with a bad taste in my mouth(literal & figurative).

So you didn’t even go in? All the yobbos could have been out the front.

I could see in, the crowd density was about the same inside.

That’s not really car culture.

I stopped going to local meets a couple years ago. The idiots were getting worse and now they always get shut down.

Yes it is, sadly. The reason they were gathering there was because it was a car show.

Pebble Beach is car culture, Le Mons is car culture, Goodwood and Cars and Coffee is car culture. Drunk assholes and people doing burnouts on the street are not car culture, just like those “street racer” morons are not car culture.

Your being rather “ No true Scottsman ” there. Culture based around cars is car culture. Just because we don’t like it doesn’t make it “not car culture”.

They scraped the bikini model off the hood of a car and grew it until there were thousands of organisms. It was a car culture.

Ugh, that really sucks. I’d like to hit each and every coal rolling douche-nozzle upside the head with a shovel.

It’s a facet of car culture, but this cannot surmise the entire culture. It sucks that happened, but that’s not everyone that falls the umbrella of car culture.

I agree. It’s a car show but it’s not an accurate representation of the culture as a whole.

I like cars. I don’t like car people.

Maybe next year the show will coincide with the opening of Fast and Furious #8. In which case some of the crowd will be doing donuts in the movie theater parking lot, and the show will be enjoyable.
Then again, they might decide to premiere the movie at the Steelyard...

Makes this another vote for a 20s and 30s only car gathering. Anyone calling for a burnout would have to be... well, even drunker than these guys.

Slightly unrelated, but relevant to having a bad taste in your mouth.
A buddy of mine got coal rolled on him several times while enjoying a cruise in his S2000 in bro truck rural territory outside the city.
Considering he has asthma, I let him know that he could record a future coal roller if it ever happened again and give the footage to police giving them the knowledge that he has asthma. Which I imagine the police could press charges for attempted murder.
He hasn't been back to that area ever since.

#notallcarculture ?
I know it isn’t all car culture, but it is the car culture that ruined the show for me.

Ugh... I feel bad for you. And coal rollers are the worst.
I would love to see someone do a PITT maneuver on some of those assholes.
Here’s something that might make you feel a little better:

The difference is that all of those things cost good money to partake in, and nobody pays to be a troublemaker.
